Thai law prohibits working for Thai employers or clients without a work permit. However, working remotely for foreign companies or clients while physically in Thailand exists in a legal grey area that thousands of digital nomads navigate daily. Thai immigration authorities generally do not target remote workers who are not competing with local Thai workers. For peace of mind and longer stays, consider the LTR Visa's "Work From Thailand" category, which is explicitly designed for remote professionals.

A visa run involves briefly crossing into a neighbouring country — most commonly Malaysia (Penang), Cambodia (Poipet or Aranya Prathet), or Laos (Vientiane) — to reset your permitted stay. Budget around 2,000–5,000 THB for a day trip depending on your origin city. Chiang Mai nomads typically go to Mae Sai or the Laos border, while Bangkok-based nomads often choose Poipet or Penang. Note that Thailand has cracked down on frequent visa runs, so multiple consecutive border hops may raise red flags. Thailand taxes individuals who reside in the country for 180 days or more in a calendar year on income brought into Thailand in the same tax year. As of 2024, the Thai Revenue Department updated its rules so that foreign income remitted to Thailand may be taxable regardless of when it was earned — a significant change that affects long-stay nomads. Thailand has outstanding private healthcare at a fraction of Western prices — a consultation with a specialist at a top Bangkok hospital often costs 500–1,500 THB without insurance. International hospitals like Bumrungrad, Bangkok Hospital, and Samitivej are world-class and many staff speak English. Travel insurance with comprehensive health coverage is essential; policies from providers like SafetyWing, Cigna Global, or AXA are popular in the nomad community. Routine pharmacy visits are incredibly affordable — many medications available by prescription elsewhere can be bought over the counter in Thai pharmacies.
